7.How to Measuring the Weight of PIGS or CATTLE
For determining the live weight of cattle and the dead weight of pigs
This weight indications under the heading «Standard Cattle» apply to cattle of normal size
raised on the farm or on the range, while the weight readings under the heading«Fattened
Cattle» apply to animals that have been fattened considerably. About 5% from the weight
indications on the measuring tape should be deducted if the animals have completed a
long journey on foot or by train prior to being measured.
Considering the great length of the tape and the tightness of the spring, it is advisable to
ease the tape back in slowly and not let it back.
In determining the live weight of cattle the chest circumference of the animal is measured
behind the humps of the elbow-joints. After measuring the circumference in
centimeters, you can measure the live weight in kilograms directly on the reverse side of
the measuring tape.
In determining the dead weight of pigs the chest circumference of the animal is measured
(see ill). The dead weight can be read on the reverse side of the measuring tape (scale
reading at the beginning of the reverse side of the tape.)
